here are a couple of unused card illustrations that were done as spec work for a game company (that shall remain unnamed). i won’t go into details, but i will say that it was an unexpected and very bizarre situation for me. altho i wish they were being printed, i am still pleased with the red demon guy.
i think the card illustration thing is a weird beast. in my experience playing magic and the warcraft card game, some of the most effective cards are not perhaps the most moving illustrations. and i’ve seen plenty of amazing illustrations that actually produce pretty weak cards. it’s more about communicating the idea of the card to me, than blowing people away with detail. the card should obviously be awesome, but it has to very clearly illustrate the idea of the card. so do you make a great portfolio piece that may not be the BEST card, or do you make the BEST card and be happy even if it’s not a piece to bolster your portfolio? i’ve definitely seen plenty of people doing both.

thanks for stopping by tony. this thing went through about a billion different attempts. i even have a newer version, i just haven’t bothered to update it. it’s barely any different anyway. too much noodling, i do!
